Periapical surgery is typically carried out when a root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) has not been sufficient to fully resolve an infection or if the infection has recurred. It is generally done to save a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted.
Common Types of Periapical Surgery:
Apicoectomy (Root-End Resection):
The most common form of periapical surgery. In this procedure, the dentist or oral surgeon removes the infected tissue at the tip of the tooth root
Root-End Filling (Retrograde Filling):
After removing the infected tissue and the tip of the root, a filling material is placed in the root end to prevent further infection.
Cyst Removal:
If an abscess or cyst has formed in the periapical area, it may need to be surgically removed to prevent it from spreading or causing further damage.
Gingival Flap Surgery:
In some cases, a flap of gum tissue may be lifted to provide access to the root area for better visualization and treatment.
