The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer-based English language proficiency test that assesses the skills of non-native English speakers. It is widely used for visa applications, studying abroad, and professional registrations. There are three main types of PTE exams:
PTE Academic: Focuses on assessing English language skills for academic and professional purposes.
PTE General: Aimed at evaluating everyday English skills and consists of six proficiency levels.
PTE Young Learners: Designed for children to assess their practical English language abilities.
PTE Academic is divided into four sections:
Speaking & Writing (54–67 minutes):
Personal introduction
Read aloud
Repeat sentence
Describe image
Re-tell lecture
Answer short questions
Summarize written text
Essay (20 minutes)
Reading (29–30 minutes):
Multiple-choice (single and multiple answers)
Re-order paragraphs
Fill in the blanks
Listening (30–43 minutes):
Summarize spoken text
Multiple-choice questions
Fill in the blanks
Highlight correct summary
Select missing word
Highlight incorrect words
Write from dictation
Optional Break (10 minutes): You can take a short break between the Reading and Listening sections.
Scoring System
PTE is scored on a scale of 10 to 90, with higher scores indicating greater proficiency. The scores are based on the performance in each section, which assesses the candidate's ability to understand, interpret, and respond in English.
